2014 Floodgate Red

When the rain begins to fall in Anderson Valley the Navarro River backs up, often flooding and closing Highway 128, until enough water flows to break through the sandbar at its mouth and the river can reach the ocean. Usually by the middle of January the river is gushing, and we release our flood gate wine sale. This wine was designed to work well with a wide range of cuisines. It is comprised primarily of Sangiovese (66%) and Barbara (17%), with lesser amounts of Syrah, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Petite Sirah. This wine is powerful yet mid-weight and transparent. This wine has creamy warm aromas of chestnut, ripe plums, and slight notes of leather. In the mouth it is fleshy and round on the palate with flavors of sour cherries, ripe red plums, nutmeg, and clove. The finish is complex and persistent with silky tannins accented by lively acidity. Aged for 24 months in neutral French oak barrels, only 416 cases produced. Alcohol 14.5%, titratable acidity 6.2 g/L, and pH 3.66
