2024 Riesling Anderson Valley

2024
Riesling
Anderson Valley

While Riesling has always been part of the heritage of Handley, this is the first Riesling we have made since 2018. It is difficult to source the varietal in Mendocino. It grows best in cold climates but is susceptible to mold in wetter regions. We sourced the grapes from the same vineyard as the 2018 vintage located next to the brewery in Boonville. This inland site gets very little fog and moisture which is ideal for finicky Riesling. This vineyard is cooled by afternoon breezes preserving the natural acidity this varietal is known for. Aromas of citrus blossoms, honeysuckle, and subtle hints of petrol. It is packed with rich stone fruit flavors of peaches and nectarines, is round and full on the palate, finishing to reveal notes of candied lime and kiwi. Nervy and edgy acidity is balanced with small amounts of residual sugar. Fermentation began in stainless steel and was racked halfway through to neutral 500 L puncheons to allow stirring of the lees to enhance the fullness on the palate. Secondary fermentation was avoided, and the wine was sterile filtered before bottling.
